About Mary

Hi, I'm Mary Duran, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and licensed chemical dependency counselor (LCDC).

I specialize in complex mental health and substance use treatment, offering both in-person therapy in Houston, TX and virtual therapy across Texas, Arizona, Minnesota, Colorado, Indiana, and Maryland.

I earned my Bachelor's in Psychology from St. Edward's University and a Master of Social Work with a clinical concentration and specialization in health and behavioral health from The University of Houston. With extensive experience in the field of mental health and substance use, I have worked in diverse therapeutic settings, including residential treatment, community integration mental health programs, a prevention program at a Houston private high school, The Menninger Clinic's adolescent treatment program, and the J. Flowers Health Institute.

Why I Became a Therapist

My journey into therapy is deeply personal. Growing up in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and witnessing my older sibling’s struggles with substance use shaped my passion for helping individuals and families navigate similar challenges. I understand the complexities of addiction, recovery, and mental health struggles—not just from a clinical standpoint, but also from lived experience supporting loved ones in their healing process.

Who I Help

I specialize in working with:
✔️ Young adults and late teens navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, and self-esteem challenges
✔️Individuals and families affected by substance use disorders, helping them find recovery and healing
✔️ Clients with complex mental health conditions and borderline personality disorder (BPD)
✔️ Men seeking therapeutic support in overcoming personal obstacles and breaking through societal expectations

My Approach to Therapy

My goal is to help clients uncover the underlying factors contributing to their substance use and/or mental health symptoms and support them on their path to recovery. Together, we will explore the root causes of your struggles and develop effective coping skills and strategies for long-term healing and well-being. I use evidence-based practices including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, attachment-based therapy, and self-compassion techniques.

My approach is warm, empathetic, and client-centered, while also being firm and direct, challenging you to step beyond your comfort zone and empowering you throughout your therapeutic journey.
