About Mary

Hi, I'm Mary Duran, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and licensed chemical dependency counselor (LCDC). I earned my Bachelor's in Psychology from St. Edward's University and a Master of Social Work from The University of Houston. My clinical experience in the field of mental health and substance use took place in diverse therapeutic settings, including residential treatment, community integration mental health programs, a prevention program at a Houston private high school, The Menninger Clinic, and the J. Flowers Health Institute.

I entered into the field of mental health due to early life exposure to the treatment world through the role of a family member supporting a loved one, both one in long-term recovery and later supporting my older sibling in the midst of their mental health and substance use struggles. I often say that I was raised in the rooms of alcoholics anonymous (AA) and found myself called to the field of mental health. Through these experiences, I developed a deep understanding of the complexities of addiction, recovery, and mental health struggles.

I specialize in working with young adults and teens (14+) navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-esteem challenges, individuals and families affected by substance use disorders, those living with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and/or complex mental health conditions, and men seeking therapeutic support to strengthen their ability to identify and express their emotions in healthy ways.

My goal as a therapist is to help clients uncover the underlying factors contributing to their problems with substance use and/or mental health symptoms and support them on their path to recovery. Together, we will explore the root causes of your struggles and develop effective coping skills and strategies for long-term healing and well-being. I use evidence-based practices including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, attachment-based therapy, and self-compassion techniques.

My approach is warm, empathetic, and client-centered, while also being firm and direct, challenging you to step beyond your comfort zone and empowering you throughout your therapeutic journey.

If you're looking for a compassionate and experienced therapist who can help you find a clear path towards recovery in Houston or virtually in Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Indiana, the District of Columbia (D.C.), Maine, or Maryland, I’m here to help. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, substance use, or life transitions, I can help provide the tools and support you need to take back control of your life.
