Hey there,
I’m Mary Duran.
My journey into mental health didn't begin in a classroom; it began in my own home. I often say I was "raised in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous," growing up supporting a loved one in long-term recovery and later walking alongside a sibling through their own mental health and substance use struggles. I know the weight of these challenges not just as a clinician, but as a family member. I understand the complexity of addiction, the nuance of recovery, and the courage it takes to ask for help.
If you are looking for a compassionate therapist who can help you find a clear path toward recovery, I’m here to help. My approach is warm, empathetic, and client-centered, while also being firm and direct. I believe in challenging you to step beyond your comfort zone to find real growth.
I specialize in working with teens (14+), young adults, men, and families navigating various challenges, including anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and self-esteem challenges. My clinical expertise runs deep in complex care, specifically for individuals living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and those struggling with substance use disorders (SUD). Through my own lived experience as a family member of someone with SUD, I too enjoy working with family members seeking support due to their loved one’s challenges. I have a passion for working with men seeking to strengthen their emotional expression and learn what it means to be vulnerable. Additionally, as a bi-racial woman (White and Latina), I use my lived experience to support clients navigating the nuance of mixed-race identity and belonging.
My goal as a therapist is to go beyond symptom management. I want to help you uncover the underlying factors contributing to your struggles. whether that is substance use, anxiety, or relational patterns, and support you on a path to true recovery. Together, we will explore root causes while developing effective coping skills for long-term healing. I integrate evidence-based practices to guide this work, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Mentalization-Based Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, and Self-Compassion techniques.
I earned my Bachelor's in Psychology from St. Edward's University and a Master of Social Work from The University of Houston. With over 10 years in the mental health and substance use field, my clinical training has taken place in some of the most respected settings in the industry. My experience includes The Council on Recovery’s Choices Program at Episcopal High School, The Menninger Clinic, and later at the J. Flowers Health Institute. These diverse roles, ranging from school-based prevention to high-acuity residential treatment, have shaped my ability to handle complex cases with steady, grounded expertise.
